How to Calculate a Tip
Tipping is a common practice at restaurants, bars, and service establishments. Knowing how to calculate the right tip quickly saves you from awkward mental math. The standard tip is 15-20% of the pre-tax bill amount.
The Formula
Tip Amount = Bill Total x (Tip Percentage / 100). For a $50 bill at 18%: $50 x 0.18 = $9.00 tip. Use our percentage calculator for quick calculations.
Mental Math Tricks
To calculate 10%, move the decimal point left one place: 10% of $48.50 is $4.85. For 20%, double the 10% amount. For 15%, add 10% + half of 10%.
